Emotions are based on an internal bodily milieu that sends information to the brain, just as visual or auditory cues come into the brain from the world around us.
The brain can thus be seen as an organ for homeostasis, a center which collects and collates feedback on bodily states, and acts to maintain a balance of the internal milieu.
This concept clarifies the role and nature of emotions, and allows them to be studied using an integrated neuroscience.
Emotions are essential to rationality and do not have to get in the way of rational thinking.
Damasio\’s team observed many people with certain prefrontal damages performing to a high level on most language and intelligence tests, but displaying gross defects of planning, judgment and social correctness.
It was shown that these defects were caused by their inability to respond emotionally to the content of their thoughts. They felt no fear.
