Somatic Markers live on an Island ?
The insular cortex (insula = island) is considered a limbic-related cortex that gained quite an interest from researchers.
Based on brain scan imaging, Mr. Damásio concluded that somatic markers are principally located in this structure. It plays a critical role in mapping bodily states that are associated with emotions.
This region provides a relevant emotional context for a sensory experience. It integrates all data received from nearly every part of the body, and then makes that available to higher-order cognitive and emotional processes.
Damage to this cortex can lead to apathy and loss of libido.
