True Dynamic Balance
True Dynamic Balance
The cardinal principle of efficient movement is balance. This is balance between body & mind, and the actual physical balance of the body itself. Balance is a dynamic state, requiring constant adjustment, even when standing still.
A body in a state of true balance (aligned with gravity and free of tension) is poised to move and generate force most efficiently. The mind and body have innate mechanisms to maintain such an alignment, both in motion and at rest.
The first step toward creating efficient martial techniques is allowing these mechanisms to function free of counter productive subconscious actions of the reptilian brain.
When these actions are not fully executed, the energy generated will get trapped in our joints and muscles, causing unnatural motions and posturing, plus permanent muscle tension for the rest of our lives. This results in premature physical aging. Read our Traumalogy section for more details.
Improper skeletal alignment and excess muscular tension cause the loss of true dynamic balance, the key to efficient movement and martial arts. Unbalance requires constant physical effort to "hold" oneself up. Balance in stillness and motion, allows a full focus on the entire physical potential.
