This is the adaptation of a lecture given by Hira Ratan Manek (HRM), December 01, 2002.
In India Sun gazing is known as Sun Salutations. Similar practices were found in Greece, Egypt, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru. We know the scientific fact that without sun energy nothing will move.
The Sun Energy’s portal to our brain are our eyes. Sunlight within 1-hr before/after sunrise or 1-hr before/after sunset is free from UV and IR rays.
If you begin gazing for 10 seconds and add each next day 10 seconds, then after 3 months, you will be gazing at the sun for 15 minutes. At this point, the energy of the sunrays have charged the tract to the hypothalamus, and activated the brainutor, one of the inherent brain’s software programs. You should feel different now.
When you reach 30 minutes/day or 6 months of continuously gazing at the sun all the colors of the sun have reached the brain via the eyes. Staring now means absorbing the original form of micro food, sun energy. At this point sun energy is no longer used to heal ailments, but used as food for the body.
The brain regulates the flow of prana to the organs, who are dependent on specific prana colors. The kidney needs red, the heart yellow, the liver green etc. Those specific colors address certain deficiencies. This is how color therapy works.
Curing of physical ailments can be done through visualization while sun gazing. Sun energy is stored in stones. You can keep natural color stones in drinking water to hasten healing, or expose drinking water in glass bottles of different colors to the sun for 8 hours. Solarized water develops medicinal properties that can be used to treat different diseases.
Photosynthesis is transforming the sun energy into an usable energy form. This is how Photovoltaic cells work and electricity is produced, water is heated, food is cooked in a solar cooker, and how solar batteries run automobiles. Only the plant kingdom needs chlorophyll. The human body can do it without an intermediary.

After 7.5 months or 35 minutes/day of sun gazing appetite reduces and food intake decreases. Appetite is felt because of energy requirements by the body. However, food is not necessary for the body to function. Only energy is. We are getting sun energy indirectly while eating food, a by-product of sun energy. What we eat is secondary sun energy. No sunlight—no food will grow.
After 8 months your appetite should be almost gone. The maximum is reached after 9 months or 44 minutes/day of sun gazing. All mechanisms associated with hunger like aroma, cravings and hunger pangs should have disappeared. No appetite left. Your energy levels should be higher than before. You have become a solar cooker.
For the sake of your eyes, sun gazing should now be stopped. The body will get discharged when we stop sun gazing. So we have to recharge it by walking very relaxed bare foot on bare earth for 45 minutes daily. Preferably when the earth is warmer and sunlight reaches your body.
When you walk bare foot an important gland in the brain’s center called the pineal gland or the third eye is further activated. The big toe of the foot represents this gland. It has always been known as the Seat of the Soul. The Pineal gland has optic nerve endings. The remaining four toes represent the pituitary, hypothalamus, thalamus and amygdala glands.
The amygdala gland is the nucleus of the sun energy and plays an important part in photosynthesis via the sunlight reaching the brain through the eyes. When walking bare foot, your body weight stimulates these glands through your toes.
This is strengthened by the earth heat/energy and the sun prana reaching the head and crown chakra. This chakra creates a magnetic field and the body/brain recharges with the energy of the sun entering you. Relax. After one year of recharging, and feeling satisfied with your progress, you can give up barefoot walking. Few minutes of sun energy reaching you once in 3-4 days is enough.

If you want to strengthen your immune system, memory and intelligence, then continue bare foot walking. As you increase the sun’s heat on your feet the brain will be further activated. The Pineal gland will become more active. This gland has certain psychic and navigational functions, as used by birds and sea creatures.
Detoxification purifies different body parts and organs once you stop eating. The internal organs can now be used as instruments for the purposes of space travel and flight. Each gland has now different functions. You can now see past, present, and future. The sky is the limit.
In 1922 the Imperial Medical College in London did not explain but decreed that solar rays are the ideal food for humans. Yogananda in his book "Autobiography of A Yogi" interviewed many saints and mystics to find out the secret of not having to eat food. The common reply was that sun energy is entering through a secret door and reaching the medulla oblongata in the brain. They did not fully divulge their secret.
A team of 21 Doctors plus volunteers supervised HRM on a diet of only water in Ahembadabad for 411 days round-the-clock. He was then invited to Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, to have his retina, pineal gland and brain observed.
The researchers noticed that the gray cells in his brain were regenerating. 700 photographs were taken. More neurons became active and none were dying. His Pineal gland was not shrinking to 6×6 mm, as typically happens when aging. HRM’s was 8×11 mm.

SYSTEM: How to do it
Based on these principles and the life of Lord Mahavir Swami, HRM "reinvented" the system of "Sun Gazing." He claims not to have invented it but says he has reinvented what was lost and now is known as "HRM Phenomena."
There are no conditions or limitations as to age, sex, or caste. Anyone at any age can do it. You do not have to fast or change your life style in any way. All the changes occur gradually. If you do not feel comfortable practicing this, stop.
STEPS:
- Stand barefoot in the open on Mother Earth. It cannot be concrete, tile, lawn or the top of a building. All the five elements of sky, air, fire, water and earth complement each other and help you then in this process.
- Start looking at the rising or setting Sun for 5 to 10 seconds on first day. Increase Sun gazing by 5 to 10 seconds every day.
- Sun Gazing has to be done during the first hour of Sunrise to avoid damage to eye retina. After the first the sun is too bright.
- Sun Gazing can also be done during the last hour of Sunset. But morning Sun also gives you Vitamin A and D.
- While praying, you have to desire that Sun energy is entering through your eyes to the Brain and Body and that it will do you good and have no bad effects on you. What you believe becomes your reality.
PROCESS: What Happens?
We all know the Rainbow. HRM says that the "Rainbow" is in our eyes. By receiving the Sun rays through our eyes, the glands in the brain gets charged and through it our brain gets charged and this brings out hidden un-utilized powers of the brain. As in Color therapy, by receiving the Sunrays through our eyes, we get all the colors and any deficiency of color is filled.
BENEFITS
1. When continue Sun gazing daily for 90 days, all the mental disorders and mental diseases should be cured. Consistently gazing will result in better eyesight. One overcomes fear. It can be fear of death, fear of uncertainties, stress and like. Nature feels pleasant. Anger is controlled.
2. When continuing Sun gazing daily for 180 days, all the physical disorders should be cured.
3. When you reach the final phase of 270 days, you overcome you urges for tasting and eating.
4. Sun gazing reduces unpleasant qualities like anger, greed, jealousy, etc. Mental depression will go away. Psychiatrists observed that SAD is caused by lack of sunlight.
5. You can develop psychic skills like telepathy and teleportation.
ADVANCED LEVEL:
Once you complete the 270 days of Sun gazing, your body becomes like the solarium. You receive all the benefits mentioned above and you become quite a serene and happy being, untouched by any and all the miseries of the world.
HRM’s consultation is required for those who want to continue the Sadhana in order to experience the power of visualization, and seeing the colors in auras.
PRECAUTIONS:
1. One should not look at the Sun for more than 44 minutes at a time. Sun gazing should not be increased by more than 10 seconds every day.
2. It is strongly recommended to consult an eye doctor periodically to check the effect on the eyes.
3. You should stop Sun gazing if YOU feel any discomfort or heat around your eyes.
4. When you perspire, sweat is opening the pores of the body, allowing the chemicals of lotions and creams to enter it. Why blame the sun for the skin cancers? Avoid sunglasses and sun bathing during the day. Use UV400 glasses when absolutely needed. When clouds gather we become gloomy. When we see the sun we feel energized.
