THE 7&<\/span>7 STAR CROSSED LOVERS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Aquila is a constellation right on the celestial equator. It has 143 notable stars. It<\/span><\/span> was described by Ptolemy, and is now one of the 88 constellations defined by the IAU<\/span><\/a>. It was also known as Vultur volans (the flying vulture) to the Romans. Vultur cadens was their name for the Lyra constellation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Aquila is Latin for ‘eagle’. It represents the bird that carried Zeus\/Jupiter’s thunderbolts in Greek-Roman mythology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Altair or α Aql is the brightest star in Aquila, it rotates quickly, and is only 17 LY away. Its name comes from the Arabic phrase al-nasr al-tair, meaning "the flying eagle". Altair is one of the 3 stars of the Summer Triangle asterism:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Summer Triangle is an astronomical asterism<\/span><\/a> in the northern celestial hemisphere. The defining vertices of this imaginary triangle are at Altair, Deneb, and Vega, each being the brightest star in their respective constellations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Vega or α Lyr is the brightest star in the constellation of Lyra. It is only 25 LY away, and is the 2nd-brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere, after Arcturus.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Eagle and the Swan<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From northern latitudes:
\n•\tIt rises at sunset and sets at sunrise.
\n•\tit is visible in the E-sky in early mornings during spring.
\n•\tIn autumn and winter evenings, it is visible in the W-sky.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Until the late-20th century, the US Air Force navigators referred to this asterism as the "Navigator’s Triangle". <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

These are the same stars recognized in the Chinese legend of The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, a story dating back some 2,600 years, celebrated in the annual Qixi Festival:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 1776<\/span><\/a>, close to his mother’s death in 1777, the Chinese Qianlong Emperor<\/span><\/a> visited the Yellow Emperor<\/span><\/a>‘s mausoleum, and placed a stone tablet with the characters "Ancient Yellow Emperor’s Tomb in Qiaoshan, part of the Taoist<\/span><\/a> tradition.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

"Qixi is a day full of romance because of an ancient love story about Niulang and Zhinu (Cowherd and Weaver Girl).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In ancient Prehistoric Times the Chinese worshipped stars that are on different sides of the Milky Way equator:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

    • Niulang, or Altair star, the brightest star in the constellation of Aquila, and<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Zhinu, or Vega star, the brightest star in the constellation of Lyra.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n

      In the Han Dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD): Zhinu (Vega) was deified as a skillful weaver girl waving clouds, and at the same time patroness of females and kids. Hence, young girls prayed for skillful hands on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, considered as the birthday of Zhinu.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      During the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279 AD): the custom of praying for ingenuity on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month had been very popular. There were even specialized markets selling the stuff for the praying ceremony.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
