They determine our emotional state, and modify our perceptions and responses depending on that state. They allow us to initiate movements without thinking about them. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Like the cerebral lobes, the center-brain structures are <span style=\"color: rgb(0, 102, 153);\">twins<\/span> as well: each is duplicated in the opposite half of the brain:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The pearl-sized <a href=\"?p=572\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">hypothalamus<\/span><\/a> twins wake you up in the morning, and get the adrenaline flowing during an exam. As a center of emotion, they control the molecules that make you feel exhilarated, angry, unhappy, thirsty, and hungry. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Near the hypothalamus lie the <a href=\"?p=571\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">thalamus<\/span><\/a> twins, a major clearinghouse for information going to and from the spinal cord and the cerebrum.<\/p>\n<p>An arching tract of nerve cells leads from those two to the <a href=\"?p=573\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">hippocampus<\/span><\/a> twins. These nubs send short-term memories to the cerebral hemisphere for long-term storage and retrieval, important for learning. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Below the temporal lobe are the <a href=\"?p=574\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">amygdala<\/span><\/a> twins. These two almond shaped pieces make us experience survival feelings, like fear and anger, as a reaction to an event.
