Ayurveda is a Hindu system of traditional medicine, known for over 3500 years. Indian Vedic and Hindu traditions go back more than 16.500 years according to the Itihasa<\/span><\/a> scriptures<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ayurveda<\/span><\/a> adopted the physics of the "5 elements", out of which the universe is said to be formed:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  1. P\u00e1\u00b9\u203athv\u00c4\u00ab (earth), <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Jala(water), <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Agni (fire),<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  4. V\u00c4\u0081yu (air), and <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  5. \u00c4\u20ack\u00c4\u0081\u00c5\u203aa (sky)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Part of this universe is the human body. It is composed of the 7 primary elements:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    1. plasma<\/span><\/a>,<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    2. blood, <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    3. flesh, <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    4. fat, <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    5. bone, <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    6. marrow, and <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    7. semen or female reproductive tissue. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Ayurvedic literature deals elaborately with measures of healthy and happy living<\/span><\/a> during all the phases of life. It stresses a balance of 3 elemental energies:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      1. V\u00c4\u0081tta (air & space – "wind"), <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Pitta (fire & water – "bile"), and <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      3. Kappa (water & earth – "phlegm"). <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        According to ayurvedic medical theory, these 3 substances (doshas) are critical to health. When they do not exist in equal quantities, the body will be unhealthy in various ways. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        It also asserts that humans possess a unique combination of doshas that define someone’s temperament\/characteristics.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        While surgery and surgical instruments were known early on, Ayurvedic theory claims that a healthy metabolism, good digestion, and proper excretion will lead to greater vitality.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        Ayurveda also emphasizes exercise<\/span><\/a>, yoga<\/span><\/a>, and meditation<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
