The difference in the genetic code is that the <a href=\"?p=622\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">codon CUG<\/span><\/a> (normally encoding the amino acid <span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">leucine<\/span>) is translated by the yeast as amino acid, <a href=\"?p=694\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">serine<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The alternative translation of the CUG codon in these species is due to a novel <a href=\"?p=597\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">nucleic acid<\/span><\/a> sequence in the serine-<a href=\"?p=620\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">tRNA<\/span><\/a> (ser-tRNA-CAG), glutamine, which has a <a href=\"?p=693\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">guanosine<\/span><\/a> located at position 33, 5&#8242; to the anticodon. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Glutamine is the most abundant naturally occurring, non-essential amino acid in the human body, and one of the few amino acids that can directly cross the blood&ndash;brain barrier.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">In all other tRNAs, this position is normally occupied by a <a href=\"?p=405\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">pyrimidine<\/span><\/a> (often <span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 255);\">uridine<\/span>).
