Only if words are felt in the belly, can we understand the power of spoken language to influence or alter the perceptual world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Language of the Birds<\/span><\/a>, or Green (vert <> ouvert) Language, is the secret or hermetic language of esotericism, and occultism, where a single word has both an inner and an outer meaning. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Initiates speak like joking songbirds, jokes few understand, because it is communicated in ‘gay speech’, a fool<\/span><\/a>‘s-like code of graphic and word symbols that have a different meaning then what is normally understood by ordinary people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Nostradamus (N) used this "occult blind<\/span><\/a>, bird, or green" language and ancient astrological code for composing his quatrains. He often made up his own linguistic rules, such as using words from other languages.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There are complex occult methodologies, such as Gematria, a cabbalistic system based on the fact that the Greek and Hebrew alphabets have numerical equivalents. Words and phrases with the same numerical value have meaningful correspondences, like Π\u00ce\u00adτρος, Peter, being 755:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Notarikon is a system of cryptographic word-play, where each letter of a word is an abbreviation for another word. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The whole purpose of the Green language<\/span><\/a> is to obscure the intentions of the writer from the non-specialist reader, by creating words and phrases that have many levels of meaning.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Fulcanelli states that the phonetic cabala is the key to unlock all mysteries. Some of the literary techniques are:<\/span><\/p>\n

ANAGRAM
\nA word or phrase, in which the letters are rearranged to form a new word or phrase. It could also produce another meaning. Chien is said to be a syncopic anagram for Chiren, which is in turn Henrie, or Henri.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ANASTROPHE
\nThe reversing of a word, in terms of letter forms, and\/or sound-values: HIRAM to MARIA. In exoteric literature the word is also used to denote an unusual order of words, as well as incomplete inversions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ANTONOMASIA
\nThe substitution of an epithet to stand for a proper name, or the use of a proper name to represent a general idea. Le Grand, or la Dame, are used to indicate well-known people, whose identities must be determined from other clues within the text. An epithet is an adjective or phrase expressing a quality or attribute regarded as characteristic of that individual or thing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

APHESIS
\nOmission of a letter or syllable at the beginning of a word. The use of the word bondance for abondance, thereby introducing the notion of the bondage to which abundance can give rise. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

APOCOPE
\nThe omission of a letter or syllable from the ending of a word: Cap stands for Capet. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ARCANE ASSOCIATION
\nThis lies at the basis of the Green Language: it is the use of specialist words in such a way that they may be interpreted as giving rise to further words with meanings evident only to those familiar with the specialism. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ARCHAIZING
\nThe use of old terms to denote things and places. Ausonne is the old name for Bordeaux, Lutetia for Paris:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe adding of a letter or syllable to the middle of a word. Calpre for the word Cape.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

HOMONYMS
\nWords having the same sound and\/or spelling as another, but with a different meaning or origin. The word Gaule stands for France, but could also point to General Charles de Gaulle. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

HYPALLAGE
\nWhen, in a figure of speech, the epithet is transferred from the appropriate noun to modify another, to which it does not properly belong. N: "L ’empereur tost mort sera condamne", from which one assumes (quite wrongly) that the emperor lately dead will be condemned. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

HYPHAERESIS
\nOmit a letter to form a word. Sometimes, the omitted letter can be of considerable importance to the reading of the text. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ICONOMATIC
\nWhen a word is intended to be read as a rebus, as though relating to a figure. The word coq means cock, but means also Gallus in Latin, which connotes France. Often, loup (wolf) is Italy, after the wolf which suckled Romulus and Remus. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

INVENTION
\nThe invention of a new word only peripherally connected with an existing word in a familiar language. N: The phrase ‘Mars en Nonnay’ is an invention. Probably, Nonnay is Virgo, from the French nonne, or nonnain.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

METATHESIS
\nThe interchanging of consonant sounds to produce different, relevant words. N. renders Augsburg to Auspurg. It is relevant because it relates to the expulsion of the Jews, (aus purgans)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

METONYM
\nA word used as a valid transference, in which an attribute of a thing or individual is used to denote that thing or individual. The word bossu, meaning deformed, is used as a metonym for the prince of Conde, who was a small hunchback. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

PARAGOGE
\nThe adding of a letter or syllable to the end of a word. The word Amerique\/Americas, was subjected by N. to both Syncope (Amerique to Americ), and Paragoge when using the word Americh: meaning the fabulous riches (rich) of the place? N.: the one who comes before Christ (Antechrist), or the one who will oppose (or i.p.v) Christ (Antichrist).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

PROTOTHESIS
\nThe adding or a letter or syllable to the beginning of a word.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

REBUS
\nA rebus is a puzzle in which words are represented by combinations of pictures and individual letters and\/or read in terms of sound values: apex might be represented by a picture of an ape followed by a letter X. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Also king Henry II as king Henri Secundus<\/span><\/a>, being Latin for ‘Fortunate Henry’. Although essentially a pictorially based art, Nostradamus uses it in clever literary ways. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The word Rebus, in its arcane sense, seems to be from alchemy, and is linked with Rebis, which means in ablative Latin, ‘the thing twice’. The thing twice is the thing seen from two aspects, once in a material sense, a second time in a spiritual sense. The construction should remind us that the initiate is sometimes called ‘the one of the two levels’.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

SYNCOPE
\nA Greek word meaning ‘cutting short’, thus an abbreviation. Technically, the word is virtually interchangeable with APOCOPE, but it seems to be accepted practice to denote massive cuts by syncope and the lesser abbreviations by apocope. Carats may mean Carcassonne, but the word also carries with it the idea of a dead body (carcasse), and hence a killing. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

SYNECDOCHEA
\n‘Part for the whole’, by which a less comprehensive term is used to represent a more comprehensive term. London represents England, or the British Isles, or even the former British empire. The more obscure Boristhenes is the old name of the Dnieper, and therefore an example of archaizing, but N. uses it to denote the vast territories divided by this river – notably, the territory to the east, which is mainly Russia. The Liguriens should really mean those from Liguria, or the Genoese, but the word may also stand for the Italians as a whole. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
