Chromosome mapping is the process of locating specific genes on a chromosome. Chromosomes are collections of DNA, that contain genes. There are different types of chromosome maps. They vary in precision and completeness.
Such a map is useful in understanding how genes give rise to certain physical traits. It helps in the treatment of disease by allowing researchers to identify disease-causing genes.

Since the vast majority of genes are encoded the same way (see the RNA codon table), this code type is called canonical or simply ‘genetic code’.
However, protein synthesis in human mitochondria relies on a code different from this ‘genetic code’.
