What is Protein?

The genetic code is the set of rules by which information encoded in genetic material (DNA or mRNA) is decoded into proteins (sequences of amino acids) by living cells.

Proteins make the cell able to function, by telling the builder proteins how to create themselves.

Proteins are integral and essential food components for all living organisms. The word protein is derived from the Greek word proteios, meaning \’the most important\’.

Proteins provide amino acids and energy, which are essential for repair and growth of all tissues in the human body. An enzyme is a protein that acts as a catalyst to a process.

About 15% of human body weight is protein, with the major proportion of body proteins contained in skeletal muscles.
