Emotional Brain?
Emotional Brain ?
Mammals like the tiger have brains that include a reptilian core plus an elaborate structure known as the limbic brain.
This brain exists in all higher animals, including humans. It is the primary site of complex emotional and social behaviors.
These behaviors do not replace instinctual impulses from the reptilian brain, but complement them. The limbic region receives impulses from the reptilian region and elaborates on it. This next leap gives mammals more choices than reptiles.
With the limbic brain, emotions evolved. It gives mammals a better way to store and communicate information.
In the emotional/anxious state of freezing, the frustrated fight response can still erupt into rage. The frustrated flight response leads to feelings of helplessness.
Those that have moved into the rage or helplessness stage still have the potential to move abruptly back into a frantic flight response or a raging counterattack.
