The Insular Cortex appears to be a "central command” center that regulates the immune system and ensures that heart rate and blood pressure increase when needed.
It reads body states such as fear, hunger and craving and pushes people to reach for the next sandwich, candy bar, can of beer, glass of wine, cigarette, cigar, snort of cocaine, Hi-sucrose foods, Hi-fat foods, or food-bingeing.
Insular cortex research offers us new ways of thinking about treating most disorders. Perhaps, one new way could be to treat the disorder, not the human being, as a 3 year old and tell it to go into rehab until cured?
